Bring It On: The Musical

Music and Lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda & Tom Kitt

Bring It On: The Musical is one of Lin-Manuel’s lesser known musicals, but it wasn’t lacking any less in his genius writing. While the story is considered cheesy and lacking depth (most likely because the plot focuses on high school cheerleading), it is often agreed that Lin-Manuel’s lyrics stand out in it. Some of his unforgettable lyrics from this show include “We’ll get vertical til we get vertigo” and “Y’all think cheerin’ is feminine? Then I’m a feminist swimmin’ in women, gentlemen” (Snetiker). Again, Lin-Manuel strategically integrates his love for hip-hop and rap into this musical with the characters from Jackson High School – a more urban school than the one the white, heroine Campbell used to go to.
